Kids today, using their noisy music and baggy clothes and stopping movies from winning Academy awards. From the 16-year-old Judy Garland in 'The Wizard of Oz' for an eight-year-old Justin Henry from 'Kramer and Kramer' losing to Melvyn Douglas in 1980, Oscar is unquestionably no stranger to shunning audience and critic faves because of the children on the watch's screen. Clearly, this doesn't bode well for Martin Scorsese's 'Hugo.' And despite an earlier Oscar campaign for 'Deathly Hallows,' it seems the Academy ship has sailed for Harry and the buddies. Directors revived U.K. stage in 2011

'One Man, Two Guvnors' was adapted from 18th century laffer 'Servant of Two Masters.'Looking back, 2011 was the year of the helmer, as far as U.K. theater is concerned. In venues large and small, directors didn't so much revive shows as reinvent them. For proof, look no further than the year's most talked-about smash "One Man, Two Guvnors."The now Broadway-bound comedy was the year's best new play and, at the same time, was a re-working. Playwright (and former standup) Richard Bean took "Servant of Two Masters," an eighteenth century comedy by Carlo Goldini, and relocated it to the faintly down-at-heels seaside town of Brighton in the Beatles-era 1960s.This was, however, not merely an update. Bean's laugh-a-minute script had inventive characterization and a galloping lunacy all its own. And it was given rampant energy and ruthless precision by National Theater helmer Nicholas Hytner, who added songs by Grant Olding. This column's Helmer of the Year prize, however, goes to Rob Ashford for his riveting Donmar Warehouse revival of O'Neill's "Anna Christie." It was sold-out before it opened thanks to the presence in the cast of Jude Law, who rewarded fans with a career-best performance.Ashford's production took the problematic play -- it wears its thematic concerns less than lightly -- and gave it intensity and immensity. The former is easy in the up-close-and-personal, 250-seat Donmar; the latter was greatly aided by a breathtakingly bold design by Paul Wills, which presented an unwritten storm at sea in front of the awestruck audience. The production couldn't immediately capitalize on its success due to the cast's commitments elsewhere. However, Ashford told Variety that, if scheduling can be worked out, there is interest in the show getting a Gotham transfer. Ashford himself is fairly tied up in 2012 choreographing Michael Grandage's Rialto revival of "Evita," developing the stage tuner version of "Finding Neverland" -- destined for an unnamed U.K. regional theater in Fall 2012 -- and helming a Broadway play that's yet to be announced.Other helmers, too, made their mark revisiting classics. James Macdonald didn't just shepherd a flawless cast through Edward Albee's "A Delicate Balance" at the Almeida, he created a rapt stillness that allowed audiences to see that this, not the more volatile "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" is Albee's masterpiece.More unexpectedly, "Accolade" a forgotten 1950 play about private behavior and political life, was given a revelatory revival by new kid on the block Blanche McIntyre at the Finborough Theater, a tiny but terrific venue that consistently punches above its weight.McIntyre was the discovery of the year. Still in her 20s, she combines dynamic visual strength with acute sensitivity to actors and textual detail and flow. There's talk of a 2012 West End transfer for "Accolade" -- the National Theater wanted it too -- but she'll have to fit that around other commitments, including a double-bill of new plays at the Bush Theater and, intriguingly, a revival of "The Seven Year Itch" at regional theater Salisbury Playhouse.Helmer Jonathan Munby also scored highly not only with a fierce production of the Jacobean tragedy "Tis Pity She's a Whore" at West Yorkshire Playhouse, but with a high-octane revival of Sondheim's "Company" at Sheffield's Crucible theater, which may have a future life in London, with talk of a fall transfer."Company" and Jonathan Kent's revival of "Sweeney Todd" pretty much stole the 2011 tuner honors. In a far-from-vintage year for big new commercial musicals, even Cameron Mackintosh couldn't turn "Betty Blue Eyes" into a hit. Despite rave notices, it shuttered after struggling through six months. With a title change and some reworking, it deserves a future. Its helmer, Richard Eyre, however, rounded out his year with a beautifully judged production of Nicholas Wright's new bioplay "The Last of the Duchess" about Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor.Eyre's 2012, meanwhile, contains the year's most intriguing prospect. He will helm a dance version of "Truly, Madly, Deeply," the movie by the late Anthony Minghella. Dramatic ballerina Viviana Durante will star in a production designed by Tim Hatley and lit by Neil Austin ("Red.") Opening out of town in the fall, it will then play London's premier dance house, Sadler's Wells. Contact David Benedict at benedictdavid@mac.com

FCC Noisy advertisements is going to be departing your TV silently - because of the FCC.On Tuesday, the government Communications Commission passed this years Commercial Advertisement Loudness Minimization (CALM) Act that needs advertisements to become stored in the same volume because the programs they are airing around. Though viewer complaints concerning the amount of advertisements have reduced since 2009, the FCC has fielded them for a long time and also the group needs the amount of issues to decrease greatly when the rule is implemented. Are you currently happy you will not need to achieve for that remote any longer throughout commercial breaks?

Epix grows by small steps and a big break

Netflix pays Epix big bucks for rights to such pics as Pars Rango. When the partners behind Epix joined forces nearly four years ago, they were quick to talk up their vision of differentiating their service from long-established pay TV rivals by making it easily accessible to subscribers on a myriad of digital platforms."Yeah, sure," was the skeptical response from reporters (this one included) and biz pundits: "But how are you going to convince Comcast and DirecTV to carry another pay TV channel?"Two years and a bit after Epix bowed in October 2009, the service owned by Viacom, Lionsgate and MGM still doesn't have carriage deals with Comcast, DirecTV or Time Warner Cable, the holy trinity of subscription TV providers. But it does have a very big deal in the digital realm with Netflix, and that has been enough to see Epix through its infancy. There's no better example of how the growing competition for content on emerging digital platforms is aiding old-school Hollywood than the Netflix-Epix partnership. The deal, which took effect in September 2010, came along when both sides were in desperate need of what the other had to offer: Epix needed distribution and license fees; Netflix needed marquee-value movies. The five-year Netflix pact, valued at about $900 million, turned the tide for the Epix partners overnight. And by next fall, the Epix partners will be free to pursue more digital dollars with their first-run movies when Netflix's two-year window of exclusivity expires. All told, the Epix partners are now probably doing about as well as they would have had they stuck with a traditional pay TV output deal. Viacom's Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate and MGM banded together in 2008 after Showtime informed each of them that it would not renew their (separate) output deals on the same rich terms as it had offered in the past."Relative to the fact that the old (Showtime) agreements were not on the table any more, (Netflix) appears to be a better scenario than having accepted what Showtime was offering," says BTIG Research analyst Richard Greenfield. "Given the cards they were dealt it was the right decision to make. We were very skeptical of the chess game around digital rights, but it definitely played out in their favor."So did they get lucky with the timing of the Netflix deal? Or was it savvy foresight? The answer is both, Epix prexy Mark Greenberg admits.Greenberg knew the digital world was about to blossom in a big way for Hollywood as consumers warmed up to on-demand and online platforms. After 17 years as a distribution exec with Showtime, Greenberg spent a year working as a consultant to Blockbuster Entertainment before he was recruited by the Epix partners. At the outset, Greenberg figured Epix's big digital play would be with Blockbuster. As it turned out, Blockbuster's fortunes deteriorated as Netflix's soared."Strategically, we set out to do this from day one. We knew there were other platforms and other devices that were going to be just as important to (viewers) as linear TV," Greenberg says. "The advantage of having the studios own this (venture) is that we can move a little more quickly as the marketplace evolves and digital really starts to deliver on the promise."On the other hand, the conventional wisdom is that Epix willingly gave up any hope of cutting a deal with Comast, DirecTV or TW Cable in aligning with the company the cable and satellite guys see as the enemy. Epix also had to temper its ambition to produce original series from the get-go, though that remains a long-term goal.Epix now counts about 9.5 million subscribers to date through its deals with cable operators Cox, Charter and Mediacom, satcaster Dish Network and the Verizon Fios service. In most of those deals, Epix is bundled into a larger premium movie channel tier, rather than charging a separate monthly fee a la HBO, Showtime or Starz.Epix continues to have conversations with the larger operators, Greenberg insists. But there is no question that a majority of Epix's viewership comes from Netflix's 23 million-plus subscriber base.Last week Epix established a beachhead on Xbox 360, making it available via authentication to subscribers who take the service through Dish Network, Mediacom and Verizon. Epix's track record with authentication on various cutting-edge services is a selling point to traditional distribs, according to Greenberg."We can help our clients drive to a younger demographic that wants to use these devices," he says. 'Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' New Yorker Review: Critic Breaks Embargo, Angers Studio (UPDATE)

From the files of you probably don't care that much: venerable NYer film critic David Denby has written a review of 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' which will publish in the print edition of The NYer on Monday, a full eight days ahead of the embargo date on reviews set by Sony. Said Sony in an email to critics on early Sunday morning: "This embargo violation is completely unacceptable." Denby's review won't be online until Monday morning, but NY Post film critic Lou Lumenick has said it's "positive to mixed" with special notice given to star Rooney Mara. "You can't take your eyes off Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander," Lumenick quotes Denby as writing. The issue for Sony is now trying to control the remainder of critics who have seen 'Dragon Tattoo' already. Andre Caraco, the executive vice president of Sony Pictures publicity, wrote the aforementioned email to critics on Sunday morning and promised repercussions for not only the NYer, but any other critics who break the embargo. "By allowing critics to see films early, at different times, embargo dates level the playing field and enable reviews to run within the films' primary release window, when audiences are most interested. As a matter of principle, the NYer's breach violates a trust and undermines a system designed to help journalists do their job and serve their readers. We have been speaking directly with The NYer about this matter and expect to take measures to ensure this kind of violation does not occur again," Caraco wrote. "In the meantime, we have every intention of maintaining the embargo in place and we want to remind you that reviews may not be published prior to December 13th." Lumenick, who along with Denby is part of the NY Film Critics Circle, wonders if Denby's embargo-breaking review has anything to do with his displeasure over the NYFCC moving its awards voting up by two weeks this year. "Denby saw the film on Nov. 28, the day before the NY Film Critics Circle voted on its annual awards," wrote Lumenick. "Before the screening, Denby -- supported by Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly -- vehemently opposed the organization's decision to vote on awards two weeks earlier than usual, and in several e-mails urged us to delay the vote until after we'd seen 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,' a movie most of us haven't even been invited to yet. "Did Denby jump the gun deliberately to make it harder for the NYFCC to see movies earlier (and vote earlier) next year? Given that the NYer often prints reviews well after every else, you really have to wonder." 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' is out in theaters on Dec. 23. As yet, no other critics have broken the review embargo. UPDATE: The Playlist has published an email thread between David Denby and 'Dragon Tattoo' producer Scott Rudin, where the NYer critic said that he broke the embargo because of the year-end glut of films -- which caused publication issues for the magazine. "The jam-up of important films makes it very hard on magazines. We don't want to run a bunch of tiny reviews at Christmas. That's not what The NYer is about. Anthony and I don't want to write them that way, and our readers don't want to read them that way." Unfortunately for Denby, Rudin didn't see things his way. "The needs of the magazine cannot trump your word," Rudin wrote in an email. "The fact that the review is good is immaterial, as I suspect you know. You've very badly damaged the movie by doing this, and I could not in good conscience invite you to see another movie of mine again." No overreactions here! Cable dramas dominate in key demo

First-year FX series 'American Horror Story' is one of the cable dramas topping broadcast competition in young-adult demos.Broadcast television may have a lock on hit original comedies, but that's no longer the case in drama, where the ratings gap has closed considerably of late.Basic cable's hottest scripted hours of the fall -- AMC's "The Walking Dead" plus FX's "Sons of Anarchy" and "American Horror Story" -- were competitive among adults 18-49 against Big Four offerings during the November sweep and actually moved to the lead in the more narrow 18-34 category, according to Nielsen. On Nov. 13, "The Walking Dead" averaged a 3.2 rating among adults 18-49, beating out original episodes of ABC's competing "Desperate Housewives" (3.0) and CBS' "The Good Wife" (2.0) in the same Sunday at 9 timeslot. But it wasn't even close among the 18-34 crowd, where the zombie skein did a 3.4, ahead of "DH" (2.5) and more than three times "Good Wife" (1.0).Similarly, the Tuesday drama battle on Nov. 15 saw FX's "Sons of Anarchy" hit a big 2.2 rating in 18-49 -- close behind "Unforgettable" on CBS (2.4) and ahead of ABC's "Body of Proof" and NBC's "Parenthood" (both at 2.0).But again, adults under 35 were drawn more to the motorcycle club stories on "Sons" (2.2 rating) than the family drama "Parenthood" (1.5) or the crime hours "Unforgettable" (1.2) and "Body of Proof" (1.1).And one night later, haunted house skein "American Horror Story" grew to a 1.8 rating in adults 18-49; while this was fourth among dramas for its hour, it was a good showing in a crowded hour that includes CBS vet "CSI" (2.6), hot ABC rookie "Revenge" (also 2.6) and NBC's top drama, "Law & Order: SVU" (1.9).And for the first time, "Horror Story" led all of its broadcast drama competition in adults 18-34, with its 2.2 edging out the 2.0 for "Revenge" and well ahead of the 1.4 for "CSI" and "SVU."Adults 50 and over are still largely enamored of the more traditional broadcast offerings, and that's why these shows tower over their cable counterparts in total viewers. On Tuesdays this fall, for example, "Sons of Anarchy" has been competitive demo-wise despite drawing less than half the overall audience (about 4 million) of either "Unforgettable" (12 million) or "Body of Proof" (10 million). But the business is built around reaching harder-to-reach younger adults, and the trend line isn't looking good for old-school broadcast dramas. Fox's 'X-Factor' opens to 12 million

Primetime's latest singing competition series, Fox's "The X-Factor," bowed to solid but unspectacular numbers Wednesday, a night that saw ABC close strong with series highs for "Modern Family" - the night's No. 1 show in demos - and a good start for drama "Revenge." According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, the Simon Cowell-fronted "X-Factor" opened with a two-hour episode that averaged a 4.2 rating/12 share in adults 18-49 and 12.1 million viewers overall - below the 5.1 demo score that NBC's "The Voice" notched with its premiere in late April, and less than one-half the 9.8 that Fox's "American Idol" opened with in mid-January. While very good fall premiere numbers for any other new show, expectations industrywide were that "X-Factor" would come out of the gate quite a bit stronger. It was beaten in the 9 o'clock hour by ABC's hourlong "Modern Family" (6.0/15 in 18-49, 14.3 million viewers overall) and also was only slightly ahead in demos over CBS' potent "Criminal Minds" (4.1/10 in 18-49, 14.1 million viewers overall), which beat "X-Factor" in total viewers. "Modern Family" was up 18% vs. its year-ago premiere, while lead-in "The Middle," whose hourlong premiere featured guest star Ray Romano, also hit series highs (3.0/9 in 18-49, 9.6 million viewers overall).Despite facing "X-Factor" and a stronger "Modern Family," CBS vet "Criminal Minds" was impressively up 2% in 18-49 vs. last year, while "CSI" was a 7% improvement over last year's premiere of "The Defenders" at 10 o'clock. Earlier, "Survivor" (3.1/9 in 18-49, 10.4 million viewers overall) withstood the "X-Factor" bow reasonably well, dipping 9% below last week's season premiere but coming in about 20% below last year's second episode.ABC used the hourlong "Modern Family" to lead into its new 10 p.m. drama "Revenge," which won its hour in 18-49 (3.4/9) while drawing 10.1 million viewers overall. "Revenge" will have to do without a "Modern Family" lead-in next week as "Happy Endings" takes over the 9:30 p.m. slot, but it's already clear that the new soapy drama is an improvement over last year's dud "The Whole Truth," which opened to a mere 1.5 demo score.Transplanted CBS vet "CSI" (3.1/8 in 18-49, 12.6 million viewers overall) led the 10 p.m. hour in total viewers as expected with its first original episode on Wednesday and was neck-and-neck with "Revenge" for the hour's lead among adults 25-54.It was a tough night for NBC, though leadoff comedy "Up All Night," which drew solid numbers with its special preview last Wednesday, showed some life (2.3/7 in 18-49, 6.0 million viewers overall) -up over last year's "Undercovers" and the best performance for a regular show in the timeslot for the net since December. Auds quickly turned elsewhere at 8:30 p.m., however, as "Free Agents" had a meek time-period bow (1.3/4 in 18-49, 3.9 million viewers overall). Things stayed quiet at 9 o'clock for the Peacock with the second-season premiere of "Harry's Law" (1.2/3 in 18-49, 7.3 million viewers overall), whose low numbers made life difficult for "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (2.3/6 in 18-49, 7.6 million viewers overall), which ran a distant third at 10 o'clock and was down sharply from last year. And the CW barely registered with "Hater" (0.4/1 in 18-49, 1.1 million viewers overall) and the once-vital "America's Next Top Model" (0.7/2 in 18-49, 1.6 million viewers overall). Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: Fox, 4.2/12; ABC, 4.1/11; CBS, 3.5/9; NBC, 1.8/5; Univision, 1.7/4; CW, 0.6/2.In total viewers: CBS, 12.3 million; Fox, 12.1 million; ABC, 11.4 million; NBC, 6.6 million; Univision, 3.7 million; CW, 1.3 million. Happy 61st Birthday, Bill Murray! What's His Most Underrated Moment?

Though I like arguing on behalf of underrated performers (Melanie Griffith, for example), sometimes it’s more fun to commemorate our indisputably great actors. Bill Murray is the ne plus ultra of deadpan comic delivery — salty as the Dead Sea, dry as Death Valley, and great in almost everything. He’s 61 today, which means it’s our duty to shine light upon his more underrated moments in movies. What’s your pick? I can’t limit myself to just one, so here are two that immediately sprang to mind: In Tootsie, Murray delivers great, bastardly rants. Jessica Lange should give about a 1/4 of that Oscar to him. In Get Low, a cute but inconsequential movie from last year where Murray plays an old-timey funeral parlor director, he bemoans the lack of fresh corpses in town. It’s fun to hear him reference Chicago in a familiar way here, too. Second City forever! What are your picks, dear readers? Feel free to wow me with your Kingpin comprehension.
